Skin as a Connector: Slackline
2025
Slackline Sound Performance
It’s a group work with members from UdK Berlin and TU Berlin. This project explores the dynamic interaction between the human body, a slackline, and generative sound, transforming movement and touch into an expressive sonic experience. By integrating conductive thread—silver and copper yarn, as well as segmented copper yarn with resistors sewn directly onto the slackline—the line itself becomes a responsive sensor.
As performers step onto or touch the slackline, their physical interaction triggers sound, allowing music to emerge organically from the movement of their bodies. The sonic environment is continuously generated, influenced by multiple parameters such as the performer’s location on the slackline and the varying tension between their skin and the line. Subtle changes in pressure, weight distribution, and contact points alter the auditory output, creating an evolving composition.
This piece challenges the boundaries between body, instrument, and space, redefining the role of skin as an interface for musical expression. It invites participants to explore not only balance and movement but also the intimate connection between tactile sensation and sound generation. By transforming an ordinary slackline into a living musical entity, the work highlights the synergy of human presence, materiality, and computational sound modulation.
